I was giving a speech recently about organizational culture, and the focus of the talk was the approach to culture by best-in-class organizations.

One organization I highlighted bases employee raises – in part – on how much staff have improved their own skills and capabilities. In one sense, that’s an odd thing to consider. Isn’t it the organization’s responsibility to develop staff? Shouldn’t staff just do their job? Isn’t performance more important than skills and capabilities?

Those are all logical questions, but let’s instead focus on the following questions. What if your organization rewarded you for developing your skills and capabilities? What if your organization realized that the way to improve organizational performance is to improve individual and team performance? What if the organization believed employee development to be a shared responsibility between the company and the individual?

If that was the case, it leads to questions you can ask yourself. How are you improving skills and capabilities?

What are you reading? Who are you asking for feedback about your own skills, capabilities, and performance?

What are you doing to learn more about technology? About communications? About engaging your customers?

And about what are you being inquisitive that could improve your skills?

Ask and answer these questions for yourself.

Tomorrow, your customers will be different, your technology will be different, your leadership will be different. Maybe even your company will be different. Find ways to get better today to prepare for your tomorrow.

Make your own case for getting a raise. Build your skills and capabilities.

Self-Scouting – When it’s all about You – 5/23/17

Every professional football team scouts its next opponent. To scout, you look at the other team. What’s their style of play? Who are their stars? What are their tendencies? What are their strengths and weaknesses?

The better the team knows its opponent, the better it can plan to perform its best – trying to mitigate the other’s strengths and capitalizing on its weaknesses.

But these teams also “self-scout.” They analyze their own team as if they were the upcoming opponent. They evaluate themselves just like an opponent would do so. It’s a way for the team to assess and improve itself. Self-scouting is a tool used to continually stay self-aware, fresh, and improvement-oriented.

So if you’d like to be a little more self-aware, fresh, and improvement-oriented, try a little self-scouting.

What is your communication style? Are you energetic or flat? Are you proactive or reactive? Do you ask, or are you passive? Are you overly chatty or concise? Then ask yourself whether any aspect of your style could be improved to have more effective outcomes, more efficient conversations, more relationship-building rapport.

In what ways are you a star? Is it your energy, attention to detail, follow-through, or organizational skills? Does your team-oriented way of supporting others or your natural method of engaging people make you stand out? Answer these questions, and find ways to “Strengthen Your Strength.”

What are your tendencies? Do you talk over the customer or – conversely – let them go on talking forever? Do you think too much about other things (or do other things) when engaged with the customer? Does your patience wane late in the day? Are you too critical of yourself? Of others? Of the customer?

Getting better requires that we understand how we are today – our style, our strengths, our tendencies.

Be a Good Teammate – 1/3/17

For few people in customer service, the customer experience always and solely is dependent on just them. More typical is for employees to rely on I.T. to keep the systems up and running. Staff rely on co-workers to offer suggestions and strategies to help inform decision-making. Oftentimes, staff have to work together to resolve issues or to deliver on a customer need.

In short, we’re teammates, and we need to be good or great teammates. The better we work together, the more efficient is the organization, the more harmonious are our internal relationships, and – oh by the way – the more satisfied are our customers.

But what does it mean to be a good teammate?

One strong definition to consider is this: A good teammate makes others around them better.

And how is that done? Think about football players trying to motivate each other to make a comeback; think about community members working together to build a home for those in need; think about nurses, doctors, and aides working in a hospital to care for a patient.

Good teammates have a sense of the psyche of their co-workers. Who needs encouragement? Who needs a gentle boot to the fanny (figuratively speaking, of course)? Who needs to be more self-aware? Who needs to be asked for their input?

Good teammates enable the success of others. Reply quickly to requests for help. Give clear, specific, documented communications. Do your part of the job by the deadline, and communicate it’s done.

Good teammates don’t intentionally put co-workers in a bad spot. Share information that may help the other. Don’t aggravate a customer that might complain to one of your co-workers. Do things right the first time with customers so co-workers don’t have to clean up your mess.

For 2017, think about how to be a good teammate.

Make others around you better.
